Ron McClung
Ron McClung was born in 1969, in NJ to a
southern family. As soon as he graduated from high school, he
moved to the South and started college at UNCC. In his years at
UNCC, he helped start the UNCC Science Fiction & Fantasy
Guild. A big fan of Star Wars, Star Trek and later Babylon
5 and a long time gamer, he helped the Guild grow while Vice-President and then President. The Guild is now a nearly 20 year
year old club and going strong. During those 20 years, Ron
helped the Guild put together two on-campus Conventions (GuildCon) as well
as several annual gaming events.
Ron, after the Guild, moved on to working for StellarCon and MACE, organizing gaming for both conventions. His first year as gaming coordinator for StellarCon was 2000 which was followed by MACE that same year. Both Cons were a resounding success and have grown in the area of gaming every year.
In 2002, he was recruited to help run ConCarolinas as Vice Chairman. The 2002 Prequel proved to many that Charlotte could host a general sci-fi con. As Con Chair of ConCarolinas 2003, Ron helped the Con grow into its first full 3-day-weekend year with success.
Ron is the proud father is 2 children, Taylor and Keegan and proud husband to his wife, Stephanie as well as a proud step-dad to Jordan Anderson, her son.
As a fan, Ron is a gamer first. He plays mostly sci-fi and horror games including Star Frontiers, Dark Conspiracy, Call of Cthulhu, Star Wars and Fading Suns. Ron says "There is nothing like taking a universe you have read or seen in a movie and forming it to your will, then letting people experience that perspective in a game." Gaming, especially Role Playing Games, is Ron's true passion.
He is secondly a movie-buff, loving all movies sci-fi, horror and fantasy including Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Star Trek, Aliens, Predator, Terminator, Hellrasier, Nightmare on Elm Street, and Matrix. He is a hardcore B-horror-movie fan, loving the great monster films of the 40s and 50s, as well as horror movies that go straight to video.
He also reads books written by authors like Clive Barker, Frank Herbert/Brian Herbert & Kevin J Anderson (Dune), David Weber, Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle and Timothy Zahn. Ever since he started working for ConCarolinas, he has been reading voraciously.
Ron has always had a secret passion for writing. Until 2003, his writing could only be found in local fanzines, like the Guild's Scroll newsletter or on his website. However, in 2003, he was asked to write for GamingReport.com (an on-line gaming news web site) and Nth Degree Magazine. He has written numerous game reviews and an article about running a good RPG. In 2007, Scrye Magazone bought GamingReport.com and now Ron appears in Scrye Magazine occasionally.
He lives in Fort Mill, SC (just south of Charlotte) with his wife Stephanie, step-son and a baby on the way. He works as a systems analyst and technician for Rack Room Shoes Corporate Head Quarters in Charlotte.
